Functional Text: Narrative

Narrative adalah suatu jenis  teks  yang  menceri takan suatu kisah yang  terjadi secara  terperinci. Fungsi/  tujuan  (purpose)  dari  teks  narrative adalah  untuk  menghibur  para  pembaca  atau menceritakan  kisah,  legenda,  ataupun  dongeng yang terjadi di masa lampau.

Suatu  teks narrative memiliki  struktur  sebagai

Berikut:

     1.     Orientation:  perkenalan tokoh dan informasi waktu dan tempat

     2.     Evaluation: penyebab munculnya konflik

     3.     Complication:  menjelaskan  masalah  yang muncul dan  harus  dihadapi  oleh  sang tokoh dalam cerita.

     4.     Resolution:  menunjukkan  bagaimana  sang tokoh mampu menyelesaikan masalah tersebut.

Narrative dan recount memiliki persamaan, yaitu menggunakan bentuk past tense. Perbedaan mendasar antara teks recount dengan teks narrative adalah  konflik.  Dalam recount tidak  ada  konflik  yang  harus  diselesaikan  sang tokoh Recount hanya  menceritakan  urutan- urutan  peristiwa  yang  terjadi.  Sementara  dalam teks narrative,  konflik  sangatlah  penting  dan harus ada.

Berikut ini adalah contoh teks narrative:

1.           Once upon a time there lived a little girl, named Snow White. She lived with her stepmother because her parents were died.

2.              One day she heard her stepmother talking about plan to kill Snow White because her stepmother hates her.

3.           Snow White did not want her stepmother to do this. So she decided to run away. The next morning she runs away from home when her stepmother was having breakfast, she run away into the wood.

In the wood she felt very tired and hungry. Then she saw this cottage. She knocked but no one answered so she went inside and felt asleep

Meanwhile seven dwarfs were coming home from work. They went inside. There, they found Snow White woke up. She saw the 7 dwarfs.

4.     The dwarfs said; “What is your name?”. Snow White said; “My name is Snow White”. One of the dwarfs said; “If you wish, you may live here with us”. Snow White told the whole story about her. Then Snow white and the seven dwarfs lived happily ever after.

Teks nomor satu diatas disebut dengan orientation karena didalam teks nomor satu berisi tentang pengenalan tokoh. Lalu teks nomor dua disebut evaluation karena kisah didalm teks nomor dua menjelaskan kaburnya snow white dari rumah. Kemudian teks nomor tiga disebut complication karena snow white pergi dari rumah dan memunculkan masalah sehingga snow white harus menghadapinya. Dan yang nomor empat yaitu resolution karena didalam teks tesebut snow white dapat menyelesaikan masalahnya pada kalimat yang digaris bawahi.
